Personal Statement on Nursing Essay

Nurses would do everything in their effort to make a patient feel better both emotionally and physically. That is also my ultimate goal. The aspiration to study nursing motivates me to study hard and read references and news extensively. My interest in nursing dates back to my years in high school. When I was a senior, I took an applied learning course in health studies, and score high marks in different subject such as medical, basic anatomy and basic life support. Honorably, I was also invited to demonstrate the skills of basic life support in the graduation ceremony. However, I did not want to go into the medical field. Nursing seemed to be the only field I want to go into. The University of Hong Kong is with a high reputation especially in Nursing and my interest in attending has deepened after I talked to students studying there. I am particularly impressed with the exchange program in nursing, which I know among the best in Hong Kong. To show my enthusiasm in nursing, I have taken related courses, such as health care assistance, physiotherapy assistance and first aid. I am also grateful to be able to work with some excellent nurses that really cared about their patients in practical training. Such experiences prepare me to further my studies in this field. Skills in communication and cooperation are the must a nurse should equip with. Being Stage Manager, supervising the work of whole backstage team, and captain of basketball team not only help strengthen my inter-personal skills, but also communication skills as well as leadership skills. In Form 6, I was invited to be the house chairperson, managing all the house stuff and organizing activities. It is a position, which enables me to develop an intimate relationship with house members and collaborate with other houses to hold some major events. I am an outgoing and cheerful person. My hobbies are wide-ranged, ranging from basketball, football and badminton to listening music, watching television and reading books. I will be proud to be able to share aspects of my life that are not apparent from my academic record. If I am offered a chance to study the program, I will do my utmost to complete the curriculum well and motivate others to be a good nurse.

Deontology: Ethics and Kant Essay

In our world today it is often hard to genuinely decide what in fact is right or wrong. The reason that it is so tough to determine is because of our human nature given everyone has their own opinion. We do not all think the same or think the same actions and consequences have the same effect. It is this reason we analyze situations with ethical theories, such as that of Kant’s deontology. Kant’s theory in its own right has a strong moral foundation in which it seems understandable to decide what is right or wrong. However it has its weakness as well. To me however, I believe Kant’s theory on deontology offers a sound premise for which to determine what is morally right or wrong. Kant’s theory on deontology is a way of assessing one’s actions. One’s actions are either right or wrong in themselves. To determine if actions are right or wrong we do not look at the outcome in deontology. Instead Kant wants us to look at the way one thinks when they are making choices. Kant believes that we have certain moral duties in regards to one’s actions. It is our moral duty that motivates ones to act. Theses actions are driven either by reason or the desire for happiness. Since happiness is differs from person to person, it is conditional. Reason on the other hand is universal and can be applied to all making it unconditional. In Kant’s theory on deontology, actions are either intrinsically right or wrong, which is based largely on reason. Kant says that it is in virtue of being a rational being that we as humans have the capacity to be moral beings. Also that moral law amounts to one’s duty. Kant says duty is grounded in a supreme rational principle, thus it has the form of an imperative. To determine what actions one should take Kant utilized imperatives. Imperatives are a form of instructions that will guide an individual on what one should do. Kant had two classifications between imperatives, hypothetical and categorical. Hypothetical imperatives can apply to one who aspires for a desired outcome. These imperatives allow one  to take an action for the method of obtaining a certain outcome, meaning if one has a desired outcome, then they ought to act. Kant has divided hypothetical imperatives into two subcategories, the imperatives of skill and imperatives of prudence. The imperatives of skill are imperatives that lead to an action in which the end result desired would be anything other than happiness. The imperatives of prudence are imperatives that lead one to actions, where the desired outcome is happiness. Kant believes that morality however is not like this. Morality does not tell one how to act in order to achieve a goal. Instead morality is made up of categorical imperatives. Kant taught that morality is universal, meaning it could be applied to all and moral law must be obeyed. He believed that when we act we are using moral law and act on the maxims, or the universal rules, of our actions. Kant’s categorical imperative states one can â€Å"act only on that maxim through which you can at the same time will that it should become universal law.† Kant’s uses categorical imperative commands one to take an action. Before one can act they must analyze the principle on which they are acting. Once they have determined why they are acting, it may no longer be ideal, then it is wrong for one to use that maxim as a basis for taking that action. Kant’s principle of morality is the categorical imperative. This means that as an imperative it is a command and being categorical the command has its whole worth with in itself. The categorical imperative doesn’t have some proposed end as in a hypothetical situation, it has its own rational necessity in its justification. Kant’s principle of morality is essential to â€Å"good will.† This is a will that acts for the sake of duty. It is the only thing that is good without qualification. Thus a good will cannot be made better or worse by the result it produces. Good will is also the basis for a major part of Kant’s theory and that is the Universal Law Formula, which is the basis in which Kant uses to determine whether or not things are morally right or wrong. This formula states that one should act in such a way that your maxim could become a universal law of nature. That is if you took your belief or ideal and applied it to the entire world would it hold true and not contradict itself. Kant’s categorical imperative has two formulations included within it, one being the Formula of Universal Law and the other being the Formula of Humanity. The second formulation, The Formula of Humanity, is a principle under the Formula of Universal Law.  Kant’s defines the Formula of Humanity as â€Å"Act in such a way that you always treat humanity, whether in your own person or in the person of any other, never simply as a means, but always at the same time as an end.† This formulation states that one’s actions are immoral if it is using a person as a means to an end. It also has to be understood that Kant’s ideals greatly fall on a matter of agency, whether or not you are in fact the one willing an action that causes a negative outcome even if you did so now the result of that action would do more good. Because you took act ion you are the agent that caused a negative outcome. The proposed â€Å"better† outcome has no value towards the morality of your action. Kant’s strengths in his theory are that they can be applied to nature as a whole, thus the universal law formula. His theory doesn’t depend on an individual’s virtues or character. His weakness is that his morality is based on one’s personal action and doesn’t take in to account the outlying consequences that could ultimately benefit from that action. With Kant’s theory I believe we can make a more sound argument as an approach to ethics. With Kant we have to take situations and become very specific with them. We focus on what the action is and universalize it. That way no matter where in the world it can apply to everyone and won’t contradict itself. Then and only then we decided if it is morally right. Also Kant’s theory is good because it leave no grey area with its matter of agency. It doesn’t let possibilities of better or worse consequences affect the morality of the action in question. Thus I believe in all Kant has a more promising approach for ethics.

I have quite of few things I want to accomplish in life, and one definite thing is receiving my degree. I now work for a large health insurance company, which has many good paying jobs, but unfortunately, I do not have the education or qualifications for these positions.Therefore, my first reason to receiving my degree is to get a promotion. I do not want to be stuck in the same position that I am in now even though it is kind of challenging. I would like to be promoted to something more that I will enjoy doing. Please understand I am glad to have a job, but I would like to earn more money. I think by receiving my degree I can make much more money. In addition, this will help me to gain additional training to help me in m y position that I am in now. Taking a couple of classes at Ashford University has made more alert and organized.Therefore, gaining more education is a plus for me, because I will be more knowledgeable, and be able to get the career I want. In addition, it will make me more self-assured, and keep me ahead of the game for when my daughter starts grade school. These days’ children are being taught college courses, and I have to be smart enough to help her. I think it is wonderful to get all the education I can to help to help me to proceed better on my job. I am going to school for Health and Human Services, so that that will definitely be a career change for me.This is something that I have been interested in for a while. I am extremely excited that I am able to take two courses in one. Many schools do not offer both Health and Human Services for one major. As a result, I feel that I am accomplishing two goals at once. Continuing My Education3 Even though I want to accomplish r eceiving my degree for professional reasons, I do have personal reasons too. One is self-improvement. This will make me feel that I can do anything in life once I receive my degree. See I have a best friend from school; I still stay in touch with, and her name is Tia.She is another reason I am going back to school. After graduating from college, she was able to find a good career, and buy a beautiful house. She was a single mother with two children doing all of this. In addition, I see people who are older than I am going back to college. That is a motivator for me. Especially since, I have put it off for so long. Although, I am excited about starting school again, it still has not been a joy ride for me. I have to admit that I am really struggling doing my assignments.I find myself procrastinating quite a bit. I tell myself that I am going to stop doing this, but I seem to be stuck on these assignments. I am really struggling with these writing assignments. I would not mind writing if there were not so many guidelines to follow. I just hope that I am able to continue my education and do not get frustrated with these assignments coming up. Unfortunately, I know this is not going to get easier. As a result, I have to stop putting things off, have better time management, organization, and better studying skills.Again, I cannot express how important it is for me to enhance my education. I am not a dumb person, but I think I can be even smarter by going back to school. I have great common sense. Therefore, with gaining more education I think I will be a genius in my own world. Another reason for furthering my education is to be the first to receive my degree in my family. Continuing My Education4 Quite of few of us have been going to school for a while, but we quit. Consequently, I hope by receiving my degree this will make some of my family embers want to go ahead and get their degree. In addition, I want to be an inspiration for my daughter. I know many of times I hear parents tell their children that furthering their education is important, but they do not have a degree their-selves. When a child sees that, he or she is not inspired as much to further their education. I was determined not to let that stop me though from going back to school, because no one else has any degree in my family. Thus, I think it is important to have that degree under my belt.I have to remember whatever is going on in my life I have to accomplish this goal this time around. Role in sports in popular culture Essay Many people around the world have enjoyed playing many sports and have been for a very long time. Of course ancient Olympics, medieval aristocrats, cave people, and hordes of peasants kicking a ball from one village to the next is, despite the genealogy, rather far removed from sports as we know them today (History of Sports, 2012). With the history of sports we can go back and look at many sports, the earliest that the sport of baseball was present in the United States goes all the way back to 1791. It was not until 1845 that the New York Knickerbockers were founded. (History of Sports, 2012). Many people today have used sports as a useful way for the people to increase their mastery of nature and the environment that they live in. Many sports have utilized the humans own basic skills to develop and exercise their own human agility and show others what they can do on their own. When we look at the sports of today, either be the National Football League (NFL), Major League Baseball (MLB), National Basketball Association (NBA) many people can understand where all of these athletes had to do to get where they are at. It can all go back to when those athletes were young kids and those people that have known them for a long time can experience how good they are and the power and wealth that comes to those athletes that have practiced and mastered their skills to advance to those different leagues of professionalism. Many professional athletes have experienced their own wealth and power in their sports no matter what sport they are in. When athletes get to that point when they get a large amount of money for what they do on the field or courts, what comes with that is they will try to receive the power as well. Many athletes think that they are worth a lot of money for what they do as a professional athlete. Today, in its current state, many athletes make plenty of money to support themselves for the rest of their lives, and with that type of wealth and money, there will always be talk of why we are paying those athletes that type of money and why do the owners of those teams pay that amount. The owners know that they will have the power to negotiate and have the athlete know who has the power to make things happen. Wealth and power in sports degrades the essence of sports from an enjoyment perspective. Players for all sports are always negotiating for a better deal, working on contract negotiations, and arguing about trade negotiations. These types of negotiations just remove the player who once enjoyed and truly love playing the sport. All of the sudden, it has become a business. Sports should be played with heart. Do the owner and franchise teams help in this matter? In my opinion, they are the culprit. There is a constant battle to gain headlines with the next big contract totaling hundreds of millions of dollars for said number of years. There is a constant battle for endorsements to sign the next potential superstar to help sell shoes or the new line of thirst quenchers. There is a constant battle among agents to exploit players into this world consumed by wealth and how success is is measured. For the pure enjoyment of playing a sport, it’s truly gone. It’s an assembly line where media and fame have crossed their boundaries as they measure athletes by wealth and power. The fans are just as guilty as we continue to pay ridiculous ticket prices and purchase over-priced jerseys and memorabilia. The level of influence we have as fans is more like an addicted customer who can’t walk away from the product. There is increasing value added to rising players and their performance level. For the athletes, wealth and power have consumed their level of importance. They have no longer become a trainable, tailored athlete to a specific level where coaching dominates the team. Wealth and power have excluded most players from accepting a team concept through the visions of their coach. There is a sense of individualism among the wealthiest and most recognized players. Depending on the sport, some of those players ignore the coach or disrespect them altogether. Some could chalk up this attitude to personality conflicts that occur on any level of sports, but there is too much consistency with sports and how wealth and power have influenced those players. If wealth and power in sports could be a stock available for investment opportunities on the NASDAQ stock exchange, it would most likely be the best investment anyone could make. There is rarely a decline as players contracts continue to increase and venues continue raise prices. Most sports fans see the great athletes starting their careers soon after completing high school. Two sports icons that come to mind are Kobe Bryan and Dwight Howard. All athletes are considered role models for young people on the court and off the court. It is for that reason players need to very cognizant of their environment and their behavior. Athletes that are fortunate enough to make it to the professional ranks usually hire managers, trainers, coaches, attorneys and publicist. Players are advertised everywhere in our society. They do endorsements for restaurants, stores, energy drinks, and foot wear. Some even have their own clothing line. Players must be at their best in every aspect of their lives. Always being watched, they are examples to the next generation. Fans of these great entertainers are just as responsible for their dress and their behavior. Children must be the primary and most important focus of our society. We begin to teach our youth immediately and this must be at the forefront of our creations and thoughts. Parents need to learn everything about the business to be able to guide their teenagers if they decided to go professional in sports. Recommendations in consuming and participation include continuing to coach and mentor our children from a young age to create the athletes we wish to see. That is where it begins. It starts with families and family morals, discipline and love. Alcohol and drugs should be discussed frequently with care. At every level of school or competition there must be rules and regulations, love, checks and balances. Sports over many generations have basically become a money making issue. No one says on national TV that they love the sport and would play for free. It is a business. We can no longer think of sports as something fun for our children because in the backs of these parents minds their children just might be good enough for the big time and their futures may be filled with money. Search For My Tongue Essay The autobiographical poem is about the conflict of identity, of two tongues. The poet, living in a foreign country, speaking a foreign language, is afraid of losing her mother tongue. She fears it might rot and die. The poem tells us of how she then dreams about her mother tongue returning as she sleeps: blossoming, growing back. It reflects the idea that our language is our identity. The poem shows the importance of identity in different ways. When she explains losing her mother tongue over her other language she is losing a part of herself: if you had two tongues inside you and lost the first one, the mother tongue. Search for my tongue represents a common and modern conflict which many can relate to and even empathise towards. The structure of the poem expresses the poets feeling and ideas about identity. Search for my tongue has a clear three part layout which symbolises the poets feelings about her divided identity. The clearly divided stanzas symbolise divided culture and identity and the difficulties of being fluent in two languages are expressed in the first stanza. You could not use them both together, even if you thought that way. There is strong imagery in the poem which represents the poets feelings about her divided identity. She imagines that knowing two languages is like having two tongues she compares her tongue to a flower: would rot and die, it grows back, grows strong veins there are two main images created throughout the poem which contrast each other. The first being the mother tongue rotting and dying as the other foreign tongue takes over. It contrasts greatly with the second image which is more positive and pleasant, her mother tongue blossoms and shoots up like a plant. She is pleased when she realises: every time I think I have forgotten, I think Ive lost the mother tongue, it blossoms out of my mouth. The poem moves from explaining what its like to lose your mother tongue: your mother tongue would rot, rot and die in your mouth to showing the joy of rediscovering it: it grows backà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¦ the bud opens, the bud opens in my mouth, it pushes the other tongue aside and so has a changing tone. I ask you what would you do if you had two tongues in your mouth this quotation emphasises that, for the writer, being able to speak two languages has led to difficulties. I ask you involves the reader in the situation making the reader empathise with Bhatt. Lines 17-30 are written in Guajarati with phonetic spelling. The phonetic spelling allows those who arent bilingual to also relate to the poem. But the use of another language could also be a way of disorientating the reader, as those who are not bilingual would not understand it. The Guajarati stanza describes the comeback of her mother tongue and also gives the impression that although you may forget your mother tongue, you still dream in your native tongue: but overnight whilst I dream it grows back and it will never leave you. The Guajarati lines are translated immediately afterwards, this symbolises the return of her mother tongue. The structure expresses the problem of identity of the poet. She puts the Guajarati tongue at the heart of the poem as if it is the heart of her being. The Guajarati part of the poem shows us her mother tongue visually and emphasises the difference from English. The English language also contrasts throughout the poem as she uses a more informal approach at the beginning making it sound like shes talking to the reader about her problem: you ask me what I mean whilst at the end she uses more metaphoric language. Metaphorical language is used in the poem to show ideas about identity. The poets tongue is described as a living thing. In the poem Search for my tongue there is an extended metaphor of her tongue being like a flower growing in her mouth: grows longer, grows moist, grows strong veins and words like bud an blossoms show that its growing back and create the impression that her tongue is rooted in her. It emphasises her feelings about her identity coming through her mother tongue. Using Guajarati shows the two languages operating in her life and makes a powerful point in the poem. It shows the contrast of the two languages. The Guajarati has more plosives and is harsh sounding, whereas in contrast the English is softer sounding. The positioning of the Guajarati: at the core of the poem with English either side of it, gives the impression that the two languages are able to function together in her life. The languages changing in the poems also represent her struggle to find her identity, representing no fixed identity but different layers that adapt to the surroundings, not frozen at a time or place. The poem presents from my aunts in Pakistan uses the experience of receiving ethnic clothes from Pakistan to explore a sense of shared culture and identity. It also projects the dilemma of divided culture and divided families. The idea of using a representation of identity is repeated in Alvis poem but there is a more materialistic approach compared to Bhatts efforts. The technique of a symbolic structure is also true in Alvis poem. Presents does not have an orthodox structure but contains distinguishable stanzas organised as free flowing verses. The lines move backwards and forwards as if to symbolise the move between the two cultures. The free flowing verses also allow for the sentences to contain sudden pauses and then continue on the next line (Enjambment). This continues throughout the whole poem giving it a hint of suspense. The structure could also represent a trail of thoughts as they resemble the path a persons mind would take whilst wondering slowly flowing moving from one idea to the next. Alvi also contrasts English culture with Asian culture as does Bhatt with the languages. She receives gifts of clothes, shoes and bangles from her relatives. In the first stanza they are described carefully and in huge detail to stress their difference to English clothes. An image of an exotic and colourful outfit is merged in the readers mind from the description. The bright colours of the salwar kameez suggest the familiar indication of exotic clothes worn by Asian women, but when she states: candy-striped glass bangles snapped, drew blood it is creating an image, symbolising how her tradition harms her. It can be assumed she feels, as if it is not practical for the lifestyle of a young woman in the west or it could be a way of showing how her Pakistani heritage was cut short and snapped like the bangle. In contrast she does secretly admire the clothes, envying their beauty and feels intimidated by them: I could never be as lovely as those clothes. She mentions feeling alien when wearing them. The poem also shows her in two minds when she longs for denim and corduroy, indicating the English side of her nature but also wants her parents very Pakistani camel skin lamp. This symbolises the conflict of her identity. There is strong imagery in the poem as Alvi uses detailed and vivid descriptions to build up an image entwined with personal meaning. This is cleverly carried out throughout the whole poem. In the poem she recalls the event of her mothers jewellery being stolen. She comments on how important the jewellery was to her mother as she cherished the Indian gold. The fact of it being stolen perhaps shows how her mother wasnt part of the Asian culture. She then once more admires the clothes and states the presents were radiant in my wardrobe. This stanza ends with the irony that the aunts who sent the traditional clothes themselves requested cardigans from Marks Spencer. I often admired the mirror work, tried to glimpse myself in the miniature glass circles. The fact that they were so small means Alvi would not have been able to see her whole reflection, just a segment which underlines the idea of a split identity. She briefly recalls her journey from Pakistan to England. Prickly heat had me screaming on the way emphasises pain and the difficulty of being divided between two cultures. She tries to visualise her birthplace using photographs. She reads about the conflict in Pakistan in the newspapers describing it as a fractured land, which reflected her fractured identity. She pictures her aunts, screened from male visitors by fretwork, wrapping presents. She sees beggars, sweeper-girls. She pictures herself: of no fixed nationality. This shows she feels no sense of belonging. Like her aunts, she is behind a screen, the screen symbolises division and stops her from seeing the whole image. The clothes make her embarrassed as she blushes: my costume clung to me and I was aflame she then states: I couldnt rise up out of its fire, half English, unlike aunt Jamila and comments on her presumably Pakistani aunt Jamila and how she can rise up out of its fire by being bold enough to wear such garments and look perfectly natural. Her half English heritage makes such display seem excessive. She feels as though her half English heritage holds her back from looking natural. Alvi: not being as daring, longs for denim and corduroy plainer but comfortable and inconspicuous. Moniza Alvi shows a paradox as she secretly admires the presents but felt they were too exquisite for her and lacked street credibility. This is shown when her school friend is unimpressed by her outfit. Moniza Alvi tends to use more descriptive language in her poem and does not use many metaphors but frequently describes in detail building up images for the reader. Whereas Bhatt uses more colloquial language at the beginning and then goes on to use more metaphoric language including an extended metaphor: Alvi does not. The other similarity between the poems is the tense. Both poems have a changing tense, reflecting the idea of changing identity.
